IN MARCH 1951 ON ST. MICAELA SHIP, BELONGING TO PEREZ COMPANC CA. BOARDS THE FIRST SCIENTIFIC ARGENTINE, HEADING FOR THE ANTARCTIC CONTINENT.
ON MARCH 21, 1951 IN FRONT A SHIP ST. AVIRON AND ST MICAELA WITH THE BLESSING OF SALESMAN PRIEST JUAN MONTICELLI AND THE COLONEL HERNÁN PUJATO, HEAD OF THE EXPEDITION COMPOSED BY CAPTAIN D. JORGE MOTTET, LIEUTENANT PHARMACEUTIST D. LUIS ROBERTO FONTANA, SUBOFFICER ADJUTANT RADIOTELEGRAPHER D. HAROLDO JUAN RIELLA, MAJOR CORPORAL D. LUCAS SERRANO, MAJOR CORPORAL RADIOTELEGRAPHER D. HERNAN GONZALEZ SUPERY, AUXILIARY 8° DOCTOR D. ERNESTO NATALIO GOMEZ, D. ANGEL MARIA ROQUE ABREGU DELGADO, D. ANTONIO MORO, SAN MARTIN BASE IS FOUNDED.
THE ABOVE MENTIONED EVENT
BECOMES A HISTORICAL LAND MARK IN THE ARGENTINE HISTORY, FIRST HUMAN SETTLING SOUTH OF THE ANTARCTICA POLAR CIRCLE.
IN DECEMBER 1951 AN AIRCRAFT STIRRED BY VICECOMMODORE MARAMBIO
FLEW OVER THE BASE TO DELIVER MAIL.
IN MARCH 1952 THE BAHÍA AGUIRRE, VESSEL ARRIVED IN MARGARITA BRING THE FIRST
RELIEF OF THE BASE MAKING ITS APPEARANCE ON ANTARTICA THE FIRST ARGENTINE HELICOPTER A SIKORSKY 51.
ON JUNE 30, 1952 A FIRE SWALLOWED THE MAIN DUELLING, TWO WAREHOUSE OF SUPPLIES THE POWER PLANT AND THE RADIO STATION.
DURING THE COMPAIGN 1952-1953, MANTINE ICE PREVENTED
THE CIRCULATION OF RELIEF VESSELS, AS A RESULT THE SITUATION OF THE BASE.
ON MARCH 26, 1953 THE CRUZ DEL SUR PLANE FROM THE ARGENTINE AIR FORCE FLEW OVER THE BASE THROWING SUPPLIES AND OTHER ELEMENTS.
ON FEBRUARY 28, 1960 THE BASE WAS DISACTIVALID, RESTARTING ON MARCH 21, 1976 AND IT HAS CONTINUOUSLY BEEN WORKING
SINCE THEN.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION.
IT IS LOCATED ON THE SMALL ISLAND BARRY, OF THE GROUP OF SMALL ISLANDS DEBENHAM IN MARGARITA BAY AT 68º 7' SOUTH LATITUDE AND 67º 8'E
LONG, UNDER THE POLAR ANTARCTIC CIRCLE ON THE WEST MARGIN OF THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA, BEING ITS COAST BATHED BY THE BELINGHOUSEN SEA.
OF A TYPICALLY MAINTIME INFLUENCE, IT IS FAMOUS FOR MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE THE PRESENCE OF GLACIERS AND ICEBERGS.

Climate information:
The area is known for strong northwesterly winds that sometimes exceed 200 km/h. The temperature is variable; in winter it reaches -37 degrees C and in summer 8 degrees C. The sea freezes in December (to a thickness of around 1.2 m). There has been some rain in recent years.

Flora and fauna:
The flora is precarious, mainly represented by limnology and mosses that are found in the rocks. The fauna is typically maritime.

The birds are permanent inhabitants in the area: seagulls, skuas and cormorants, as well as mammals: seals and elephants, blue whales and orchards.

The following science activities are carried out at Base San Martin:

  • Glaciology - sea ice zone
  • Meteorological observations
The San Martin Laboratory (LASAN) within the base also performs the following activities: - Ionosphere behaviour; - Atmospheric whistle study; and - Cosmic Noises Analysis. The base staff also carry out the following: - logistics and maintenance; - exploration and acknowledgement patrols; - tourism support; - maintenance of search, salvation and rescue capabilities; - logistic support to scientific activities; and - performance of National Record of People (Reg. Nacional de las Personas).
